Monocentropus balfouri comes from the island of Socotra, the largest in an archipelago extending off the horn of Africa. Although geographically an extension of Africa, these islands are politically part of Yemen. M. balfouri is well known in the hobby, and is among the most commonly kept African species. Keeping requirements are as for African baboon tarantulas in general, with most hobbyists keeping them on the dry side with ready access to water.
M. balfouri is unusual in that the species can be kept peaceably in groups. We have found no documentation of group-living in the wild, but the testimony of scores of hobbyist raise no doubt as to peaceable group living in captivity. Although some sources claim specimens must be raised together from the spiderling stage, rigorous proof is lacking.
