Description

HIgh-elevation tarantulas have been of some interest to arachnologists lately, and by extension, hobbyists. One of them, Hapalotremus albiceps, though known to the west since 1903 (Simon), has not been available until recently.

In 1903 Simon documented the type locality for H. albipes as “Bolivia, Chaco.” [1] It is a nonspecific reference given the size of the Chaco in Bolivia. Further location information was not widely available until a team working on the genus found specimens near La Paz, Bolivia, in or around Unduavi, Coscapa, and Botijlaca. [2]

Hapalotremus localities in Bolivia
Hapalotremus albipes has been found at high elevation near La Paz, Bolivia. [2]
The city of La Paz sits at 12,000 ft. in the Andes (see left). The elevations recorded by Ferretti et al for Hapaloptremus are record-breaking for tarantulas. H. albipes, for example, is found between 10,500 ft. and 14,000 ft. For reference, the highest elevation in the contiguous US is Mt. Whitney, California, at 14,494 ft.

Further interesting information regarding H. albipes habitat and that of other Hapalotremus species can be found in the manuscript by Ferretti et al. [2]

By virtue of little being known about tarantulas living at high altitude, we recommend H. albipes for advanced hobbyists and experienced breeders.
